Calhoun County Schools is proud to welcome Dr. April Smith as our new Student Advocacy Specialist and District Coordinator for PBIS, Family Engagement, and Federal Programs.
With more than 28 years of distinguished experience in education, Dr. Smith brings a wealth of knowledge, leadership, and an unwavering commitment to ensuring that every student has the opportunity to thrive. Throughout her career, she has served in numerous impactful roles, including mathematics teacher, school counselor, assistant principal, principal, Federal Programs Manager, District PBIS Coordinator, and Tribunal Hearing Officer. These diverse experiences have equipped her with a comprehensive understanding of student achievement, school improvement, instructional leadership, behavioral supports, family engagement, and the effective implementation of federal programs.
In her new leadership role, Dr. Smith will collaborate with students, families, teachers, administrators, and community partners to strengthen family-school partnerships, foster positive school climates, expand student support systems, and coordinate initiatives that promote academic excellence, student well-being, and equitable opportunities for all learners. She will also lead districtwide efforts in Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS), Family Engagement, and Federal Programs, helping ensure that every school has the resources, guidance, and support needed to meet the diverse needs of its students.
Dr. Smith earned advanced degrees in Educational Leadership and Counseling Psychology, completing her studies at Savannah State University, Long Island University, Albany State University, and Argosy University. She is passionate about empowering educators, inspiring students, and cultivating meaningful relationships that strengthen schools and positively impact the communities they serve.
Beyond her professional accomplishments, Dr. Smith is the proud wife of Derrick Lamar Smith and the devoted mother of four wonderful children: Lopriela, Erin, DJ, and Josiah. Guided by her faith and a heart for service, she is honored to serve the students, families, educators, and community of Calhoun County Schools.
