Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS)

What is Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS)?

PBIS is a multi-tiered framework that uses evidence-based practices for teaching and promoting positive student outcomes. PBIS uses data to reduce disciplinary incidents, improve school safety, and increase academic gains. The premise of PBIS is that continual teaching of behavioral expectations combined with acknowledgment and feedback on positive student behavior will reduce discipline issues.

Expected Gains:

  • All students develop, learn, and enhance their social, emotional, and behavioral competence to support their academic engagement.
  • All educators develop positive, predictable, and safe environments that promote strong interpersonal relationships with students through teaching, modeling, and encouragement.

Expected Experiences:

  • Reductions in major disciplinary infractions and antisocial behavior.
  • Improvements in aggressive behavior, concentration, prosocial behavior, and emotional regulation.
  • Improvements in academic engagement and achievement.
  • Reductions in teacher and student-reported bullying behavior, peer rejections, and substance abuse.
  • Improvements in school climate.
